Wild Horses Flag Book
Cross Curricular-Art and Language Arts
Grades 9-12
Description:
Form a thought and close your eyes. Feel the spirit of that thought. Imagine a form to represent the idea, a color to express it and the materials to create it. This book is a variation of many projects found in the "Cover to Cover" book by Shereen La Plantz. Any idea can take any form. Any paper can carry the words. The papers used in this book reflect a few simple words. Many of the specialty papers in the Sax® catalog can be used to express other thoughts. Handmade and collage papers are additional options.
Objectives:
Students will communicate feelings and ideas through creative visual and written expression.
Students will create a unified, functional design by combining multiple art materials and computer graphics.

Directions:
Creating the book components
- To create the cover, cut 2 pieces of chipboard into 7" x 6-1/2" rectangles.
- Cut 2 pieces of the Pinto paper, 8" x 7-1/2".
- The binding is a 2-part process. The inner binding is cut to 8" x 6-1/4" using the Canson Mi-Teintes black paper. Cut one piece.
- The outer binding is 6-1/4" x 2-1/2". Use the Thai Mango or Mi-Teintes paper. For added interest, these pieces can be torn instead of cut with a scissors. Cut one piece.
- The pages or flags will hold the verse. Cut or tear twelve 6" x 1/2" strips.
- Creatively break the verses into 12 segments. This book has a repeated verse broken into 4 sections and repeated 3 times. "wild horses...could not...drag me...away." An appropriate font was chosen along with horse graphics. The verse was printed 3 times with the breaks and graphics. Print the title of the book in a slightly larger font. Each line of verse was spaced far enough apart to allow for cutting.
- Unryu paper was cut to an 8-1/2" x 11" sheet. Using a copier, print the verse onto the Unryu paper. The verse could also be hand-lettered if desired.
- Cut the verse apart. Each piece should measure 4-1/2" x 3/8".
Assembling the book
- Begin by folding the inner binding into a concertina (accordion) fold. Each fold should be 1" wide and 6-1/4" long.
- Lay the hard cover pieces side by side, face down with the shorter side nearest to you. Leave a 1" gap between them.
- Apply glue to 1/2" of the long edge of the outer binding. Glue the outer binding to the cover. Allow to dry.
- Flip the cover over and attach the inner binding. Use a full 1" overlap to attach this binding. Allow to dry.
- Apply glue to one side of the Thai Mango paper. Place it over the inside of the chipboard cover making sure to cover the exposed surface and the glued edge of the inner binding.
- Following the illustration, attach the 12 longs strips to the concertina folds. Alternately glue each strip on each side of the folds.
- Glue the verse onto the long strips. Be careful not to place the verse in the binding.
- Allow to dry.
