Acrylic Workbook: A Complete Course in 10 Lessons
By Jenny Rodwell
Spiralbound Hardcover, 128 pages, Copyright ©2006
David & Charles Limited

When it comes to fine artist paints, acrylic is still the new-kid-on-the-block. As Jenny Rodwell, author of the Acrylic Workbook, points out, until as recently as fifty years ago artists still painted with either oils or watercolors. Today, though, acrylics are recognized as one of the most versatile and durable painting mediums, with many of the same advantages of watercolors, gouache, or oils, without the same drawbacks. Many professional and amateur artists work exclusively in acrylics.

For those new to acrylics, the Acrylic Workbook is a true beginner's book that introduces readers to the unique effects that can be achieved with acrylics. The opening chapters provide good discussions of the nature of acrylic paints, as well as the materials, equipment and mediums that are used with it. Readers will learn what types of brushes and surfaces work best for various techniques.

Following this introductory matter, the bulk of the book consists of ten lessons. Rodwell intends the lessons to be followed sequentially, so that skills build upon one another in a logical progression. Each of the lessons includes a bullet-pointed list of the aims of the lesson, explanation and step-by-step demonstration. Lessons include Color, Getting Started, Creating Textures, Washes, Creating Form, Still Life, Effects with Paint, Landscape, People and Collage.
