If you spend much time on the Internet, you've probably encountered a frequently asked questions (FAQ) section. These sometimes helpful lists are intended to provide more extensive knowledge of the company, organization or product in question. Colored Pencil Solution Book is kind of like a long, very informative FAQ. Each topic is introduced as a question about colored pencil techniques. The format works well because the answers, usually delivered in one or two pages, are very focused and to-the-point.
The questions are divided into seven broad categories: setup, composition, application and technique, color and light solutions, reflection and transparency solutions, texture solutions, problem subjects and fixing mistakes. When appropriate, answers include step-by-step demonstrations of techniques. The book includes over 20 such demonstrations showing readers how to liquefy pigment, create the look of realistic metal, create realistic texture and much more. The book does focus almost exclusively on still life subjects, so if you are looking for portrait and landscape techniques you may need to look to other resources.
This is a book for artists of all levels. The beginner will find good advice on selecting pencils and setting up a workspace, as well as the essential basic techniques. More experienced artists will find solutions to particularly challenging questions, such as how to draw clear glass on a white background, how to make objects distort in water and how to portray the look of metallic glaze.
